Because we live in
the age of television,
movies and more, our
brains have basically
been programmed to
snack. Our kitchens are
full of snack foods like
chips, soda, cake,
cookies, and everything
else unhealthy that the
stores are selling. Even
if we make up our minds
that we are going to
make healthier choices,
and we are not going to
snack between meals, as
soon as we turn on the
television we are
bombarded by advertising
messages that tell us we
need certain foods and
drinks. Of course, they
rarely ever advertise
healthy foods! Most of
the commercials that we
end up watching are for
chips, soda, cookies,
pizza, and others. Also,
because these foods tend
to be somewhat
addicting, as soon as we
see these tempting
advertisements, we get a
craving for what is
being advertised. There
are a few ways to watch
TV and still make
healthy choices though.
You will probably still
get
cravings for foods
advertised, but if you
surround yourself with
healthy snack foods, you
shouldn’t have a problem
making the right eating
choices.
One good suggestion I
can make is for you to
purchase a food
dehydrator. These
machines will dry out
foods like apple slices,
strawberries,
blueberries and other
fruits. They are also
able to dry out canned
products. A food
dehydrator will come in
handy for surrounding
yourself with healthy
snack choices. Remember
to slice the food thinly
though, as the thinner
the food, the faster it
can dry. Dried foods
will also keep for a lot
longer than fresh foods
will. Food dehydrators
are very easy to use.
All you have to do is
pop the food slices in,
turn the machine on and
wait.
Some foods that make
excellent dried snacks
are strawberries,
apples, bananas, meat
and even potatoes! Dried
strawberries are good
for making smoothies,
because when they are
dried, they have a sweet
taste that only sugar
can rival. Try putting
some dried strawberry,
apple and banana slices
into your smoothie. You
won’t have to add any
sugar at all. If you
find that you are
craving chips, throw
some thinly sliced
potatoes into the
dehydrator, sprinkle
some salt or other
seasoning onto them and
they will make a nice
healthy snack that
should fulfill your
craving. Drying meat can
save you some money as
well as making a
different snack food. It
is always good to have
variety when it comes to
your snacks, or you will
be tempted back to the
unhealthy foods. You can
make jerky out of beef,
fish or turkey.
Another healthy snack
food is any type of
vegetable. Try preparing
a veggie platter with as
many varieties of
vegetables you can think
of that are good to eat
raw. You can snack on
these veggies alone, or
with a low fat dip. Or
you can put your
favorite selection of
veggies in a bowl or
plate with a little oil
and vinegar dressing or
a squeeze of lemon juice
on them. The same
principle can be applied
to
fruit. Have a fruit
salad for a snack. Eat
healthier snacks and you
will notice a difference
in your body.
